Andorra is considered to run one of the best "public health system" in the world.

Número de la Seguretat Social (Social Security Number) is a unique and personal reference number that gives you access to social welfare benefits, public services and information.

All foreign employees with residence and working either for Andorran companies or self-employed must contribute to the Andorran social security and be included in the C.A.S.S. (Caixa Andorran de Seguretat Social).

Andorran Social Security contributions are moderate, if compared with other European countries. 22% of the salary is quoted: 10% goes to health system and the remaining 12% to the pension system.

You cannot apply for a "Social Security Number" before you land in Andorra. You must be settled in the country in order to apply for it.

The Healthcare System

Only some doctors in the hospital are salaried by the Andorran CASS, the rest are liberal professionals who have an agreement with the Social Security. This means that citizens can choose which doctor they want to go to: they can either choose their GP or the specialist doctor.
At the end of the visit, the patient pays 100% of the cost and later on - in a few hours or days - the Caixa Andorrana de Seguretat Social (CASS) returns 75%. The same goes for the medications that are prescribed.

When a treatment requires a hospital admission, Social Security covers 90% of the treatment cost and the patient only pays its 10%.

For those who do not have the resources to face 25% or 10% of the co-payment, an independent commission of the CASS evaluates situation by situation and grants the coverage entire cost.

On the other hand, there are certain medical specialties and certain treatments that are not carried out in Andorra. Nevertheless, the Andorran Social Security has agreements with health centres both in Spain and France, mostly in areas such as Barcelona and Toulouse. In this case, patients can also choose which foreign centre they want to be treated for.

General Practitioners and Specialist Visits in Andorra

When registered as a CASS member you will be given a social security card (targeta sanitària), a book of vouchers, a list of local medical practitioners and hospitals and general information about services and charges.

Afterwards, you will be assigned a general doctor (metge de capcelera) in the area where you live. However, you can choose which doctor you want to go to: your assigned GP or the specialist doctor (including dentist).

The European Health Insurance Card

Andorra is not a European Union member. Therefore, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), does not provide health coverage in Andorra. Make sure you have comprehensive travel and medical insurance that is valid in non-EU countries.
